Which model are you using for the stall correction Dr. Hanley? Nice video btw
Thanks. I am using a stall model based on the airfoil (at midspan) boundary layer separation.
thank you doctor , you are one of the best
Thanks, Abdalla. I appreciate it. Best wishes
Please share me the Prt file of Spoiler design !
My 2 meters flying with swept angle 22 degrees, is my swept angle too small? Never fly before still building the remote control.
Why did you use eppler foil specifically ? Thanks
Hi Bhargav, thanks for your message. A few years ago, there was a post on Boatdesign.net featuring a hydrofoil exercise to validate CFD methods (see www.boatdesign.net/threads/hydrofoil-exercise-to-validate-cfd-analysis.51552/). This was the airfoil used in the exercise so I used for this example. Thanks again. Best regards, Patrick
hi, may i ask you for the stl files of the CAD X-57?
Thanks for your message. The CAD file can be obtained from the OpenVSP hangar via this link: hangar.openvsp.org/vspfiles/414 Once you have the file, download OpenVSP.org (which is free) and then you can generate a stl file to any resolution and quality. Best regards - Patrick
@@hanleyinnovations Thanks i found it two days ago. now i could know the rest of the geometry except the airfoil. could you give me the coordinate of airfoil? because in VSP only showing the 2d profile without any characteristics available...
@@ppiduniakawasanamerikaerop6084 Thanks for your reply. I do not explicitly know the coordinates of the airfoils. They are already built into the OpenVSP file and will be included with the stl file export. The section can be seen by selecting the wing and then looking at the Airfoil tab in the OpenVSP interface. Thanks again. Please let me know if you have other questions. Best regards, Patrick
@@hanleyinnovations yes i could do that but no information of camber location or thickness. The only way is to make curve fitted of points in the surface and try to export it manually. But thank you!
Good Job! Greeting from Jordan .. Can you please send to me this software?
Hi Esra, Thanks for your message. I hope you are doing well. Stallion 3D is available at www.hanleyinnovations.com. As it is a commercial package, it is not free but available as a yearly subscription. Thanks again. Best regards, Patrick
Hi Patrick, what did you use as your reference area? Is the the projected area from the front of the plane, from the side of the plane, or from the top of the plane (looking down on the wing [planform area]). Thanks!
Hi Erick, I used the wing planform area as the reference area. Thanks for your comment. Best regards, Patrick
Hi Doctor Patrick Hanley,I'm an undergraduate student from china, your software is quite helpful to me, but I can't afford it. Can you offer me this software for free? I will be very grateful!
Dr. Hanley, i am quite surprised by the capability of Stallion 3D. How come there is no much visibility of it in terms of commercial usage, publications and reviews? Could it be used as automated tool for CFD analysis of batch run for MDO purpose
Hi Devendra, Thanks for your comments. I hope you are doing well. Stallion 3D is developed as a personal CFD analysis tool for Windows 7, 8 or 10. It does not have a batch function. The software runs interactively and enables users to accurately analyze complex design shapes on an ordinary laptop/desktop computers. Stallion 3D gives engineers a tool to make positive design decisions early in the design process. Thanks again, Best regards, Patrick
Because it is hella expensive for any single person to use.
Can u send the link for download this software...
HOLY F*CK 6000$
which program is used?
Hi Buscari, I used 3DFoil for this tutorial. More information can be found at www.hanleyinnovations.com/3dfoil.html. Thanks for your message. Best regards, Patrick
how can i download this software??
i want a program that asks.. would you like us to optimize this design.. click yes.. and WALLAAA
its nice to analyze...BUT...how do you IMPROVE the designs
could we get the analysis of the aeroelasticity on the wing
Hello Dr Patrick Hanley, it's a very cool software you have there. I am building a VTOL quadplane (UAV) for surveillance applications, and I wonder if Stallion 3D is suitable for quick CFD (and FEA) simulations? Also, how could I calculate the reference area and reference moment length for a custom UAV? By "reference area" you mean the frontal area? Regards, Dr Wasim Akber
Cool video. Well done!
Hi Denton, thanks for your kind words. Best wishes - Patrick
Hello Patrick, I watched your video and it's very useful. I'm working in a project about the design of an UAV for observation of marine fauna. Could you gime your opinion? The wing span is 2,06m AR:11,8 root chord 200mm tip chord 100mm total weight 1,8kg. T tail.
Hi Bryan, your application is very interesting. You design is for high endurance/range. I think that 3DFoil can be used to help with airfoil selection, tip stall and stability. Let me know if you have any other questions - Patrick
does it work on blender model too
Hi Aniket. Thanks for your comments. It works only on the STL format. You can export in this format or convert your model to STL.
this is nice. are both software free to download please?
Thanks Olajide for your comments. NASA OpenVSP (for aircraft creation) is free. It can be found at OpenVSP.org. Stallion 3D (for the aerodynamics analysis) is not free. More information can be found at www.hanleyinnovations.com. Best wishes.
Patrick Hanley thanks really. please how much does it cost to get the aerodynamic analysis software? and what alternatives are there?
Hi Olajide, Thanks for your follow-up message. The software is available at our website: www.hanleyinnovations.com/stallion3d.html . Please let me know if you have any questions.
Hello Patrick, My name is Robi from Indonesia. I would ask to you about wing in race car. Can I have your electronic mail ? Thank you!

Awsome work! Thx for sharing.
Hi Bruno, thank you very much. Best wishes - Patrick
Hi, I was very surprised to see the L/D as "15.96" which seems to be unusually high for such an RC plane. The L/D for Airbus A320 with such high Reynolds number and such high aspect ratio is around 18.. thanks
Hi Bagrat, thanks for your comments. In this case, only the pressure drag was computed. The friction drag was not included in the l/d computation. Stallion 3D v4 computes both friction and pressure drag.
Hello my name is Hugo Escobedo and want to know how can I buy and learn to use this software?. I am designing an aircraft and need to calculate its characteristics
Hi Hugo, thanks for your email. More information about purchasing Stallion 3D can be found at www.hanleyinnovations.com.

Hello, thanks for sharing your video. Can you help: I make a fly wing to work in aerial video to agriculture purpose. What in your opinion is the best airfoil, have a payload of 2kg, wing lenght 1300mm I need a airfoil very stable. thanks
Hi Paulo, thanks for your message. Airfoils by Selig or Eppler are good for flying wings. See the following page: m-selig.ae.illinois.edu/flyingWingAfs/ for a few suggestions. 3DFoil is great to determine an optimum airfoil choice based on your aircraft's wing size, endurance, range and weight specifications.
Patrick, do you recommend this software for analysing the runner blades of water turbines, like in a typical francis? have you got any customer feedback, who used the software for such purposes?
+tkzsfen Thanks for your question. VisualFoil is for isolated airfoil analysis. So if the blades in the turbine are close to to each other (interacting) then the software will not provide very accurate results.
does any body know of a video showing how to install OpenVSP on linux, if so please send me the link because I have tried the doing it my self with no luck. philanisangweni712@gmail.com
Hi Philani, thanks for your question. Please visit the OpenVSP page at www.openvsp.org for more information about the operating systems.

How i can download this program?
+Mazen Algeneral Thanks for your message. Stallion 3D is available by subscription. More information is at www.hanleyinnovations.com/stallion3d.html . Best wishes.
I really don't know how to reading the color I know the red colour is high pressure, but how about the natural and the negative pressure??
Aaron Cheng The colors represent the values of the pressure coefficient (Cp). The positive values represent pressure magnitudes that are higher than the ambient (atmospheric). The negative values represent pressure magnitudes that are lower than the ambient pressure.
thanks a lot:)
